Job Description

Full-Time Field-Based, U.S. + International Rolling Hire

About Field Engine

Field Engine Wildlife Research & Management is a wildlife research and management company. We develop tools and protocols, run field programs, and conduct applied research, all under one roof. Field work drives what we build, research sharpens it, and programs put it to work.

We are a Certified Women-Owned Small Business, founded in 2020 and headquartered in Connecticut, with field reach in 39 countries. We are the people behind Pig BrigĀ®, the patented whole-sounder trap system used by agencies and landowners worldwide, and a growing services team of biologists, veterinarians, project managers, and field operators working with agencies, NGOs, universities, and landowners on wildlife challenges that demand more than research, products, or programs alone.

Purpose of the role

Field Engine is hiring a Wildlife Biologist for a field-based role focused on ungulate population management and research projects. Target species include various deer species and wild pigs, with additional opportunities for other species as projects develop.

The work includes both lethal and nonlethal control of native and non-native ungulates. You will be a hands-on member of the field team, responsible for implementing projects on the ground and maintaining strong working relationships with the partners we serve.

What the role looks like

You will work as part of a small team that includes biologists, veterinarians, technicians, and project managers. Days are physical. Daily duties include baiting, site prep, trap management, net hanging, camera data analysis, and other field work as projects require. Night work is frequent and the schedule flexes with weather and conditions.

This position requires extensive travel, with limited time off during the primary field season (generally September through April). Most projects are in the U.S., with a smaller number of international deployments each year. Field conditions range from cold northern forests to hot tropical settings, and accommodations are often rustic.

Who you are

This role suits someone with a strong commitment to conservation, real integrity, and the temperament to be a steady, positive presence on a small team through long days and months away from home. Attention to detail matters. So does the ability to track multiple things at once without dropping any of them.

Relationships with partners are central to how we work. You will need to be a clear, frequent communicator with the agencies, landowners, and collaborators on each project.

Required qualifications
  • B.S. in wildlife science or a related field
  • Experience hunting and/or safely using firearms
  • Work experience in conservation or wildlife management projects involving multiple partners and stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude while working with team members and partners who may have varying missions, opinions, and personalities
  • Physical fitness to perform efficiently under demanding conditions, including lifting heavy objects, walking variable terrain with a backpack, and safely climbing trees and working from tree stands
  • Ability to live harmoniously in small group settings and in remote field camps
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity, approachability, and willingness to listen and learn from internal and external partners
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, ability to solve problems with limited supervision, strong attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Willingness and ability to spend significant time in the field away from home, with individual deployments ranging from 1 to 16 weeks or longer; expect to be away from home several months per year
  • Willingness to maintain a highly flexible annual work schedule that comes with contract-dependent work
  • Strong mechanical and technical troubleshooting abilities
  • Familiarity with the safe operation of various hand and power tools
  • Experience operating 4WD trucks, ATVs, and boats
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience in wildlife population control and/or eradication, including baiting, capture, and camera surveys
  • Experience with wildlife capture
  • Experience with GPS and GIS applications

This is a full-time position. Our Wildlife Biologists typically have several months off each year during the off season. This is a U.S.-based position, and the successful candidate has the flexibility to live in the U.S. state of their choosing during the off season.

The extension of this position is contingent upon successful performance within an annual probationary period and project funding. Our goal is for the successful candidate to become a long-term member of our team.

Compensation is competitive and will be based on the applicant's work and educational experience. Travel, room and board costs are covered during field deployments.

  • 100% employer-paid medical insurance
  • 90% employer-paid dental and vision insurance
  • Life insurance and 401(k) with company match
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance
  • Monthly technology stipend
  • Travel, room and board costs are covered during field deployments
Equal opportunity employer

Field Engine Wildlife Research & Management is committed to building an inclusive and diverse workplace. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or veteran status.
